Slide Heaven @ Sonoma Jazz+
by admin
I hung out with delta blues slideman Roy Rogers a few weeks ago backstage at the Mystic Theater. We rolled some video and chatted about New Orleans before he whipped out a beat-up acoustic for some nasty bottleneck blues.
When I mentioned Bonnie Raitt, he lit up.
“We’re a glove fit,” Rogers explained. “She likes my rhythmic sense a lot.”
To make his point, he broke into the meaty intro to “Gnawin’ It.”
“It’s kind of a chunk thing,” he says. “And she doesn’t do that.”
When Raitt hops on stage to close out Sonoma Jazz+ on Sunday, Rogers will be right by her side to chunk it up all night long.
It’s all in the latest Soundcheck video as Rogers talks about working with John Lee Hooker and the sanctity of open tuning:
Also, Rogers mentioned he’s been holing up at Prairie Sun recording studios with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, working on a spoken-word record of the itinerant folkie’s life. Look for that to come out later this year or early next year.
Before you hit the Pigeon John show at the Raven Friday night, you gotta learn “The Pigeon” dance. Don’t be shy (and don’t be distracted by the Bert and Ernie version).
The L.A. rapper always rocks it live. But what’s really special about Friday’s show: All proceeds go to James Jewett, the Windsor High grad and football standout recently paralyzed in a car crash.
Hats off to R. Costa who booked the gig (and also lined up slick Sebastopol rapper Smoov-E at the Raven on Saturday). Also on the bill Friday: Giant Panda, Ahmad and Lost Role Models. 8 p.m. $20-$25. www.raventheater.org.
Dropping in at the Wells Fargo Center Friday night, the latest Foreigner tour ($19.50-$69.50) is sponsored by AARP.
Not even the Stones have done that yet.
The official tour name? “Feels Like the First Time.”
Ahhh those were the days.
Wait – what about those who can’t remember the first time?
Just to rub it in: “Double Vision.”
