Weekend Dish

by admin

Donning habits and flowing robes, actors Jeremy Berrick and Curtis Hoffmann took a spin around Sonoma Plaza the other day.

They terrorized small babies and cigar-puffing tourists with sacerdotal psalms and melodious morals – all for the sake of improv and character development leading up to the premiere of “Nunsense A-men” this weekend.

Billed as “Mrs. Doubtfire enters the convent,” the musical hail mary opens Friday at the Playbox, 7202 Sonoma Highway, Sonoma, running through Feb. 24. $23, 332-0621.

It’s all in the latest 60-Second Weekend vodcast:

Bonus Round (and other bits and nubbins):

Merle Haggard returns to Sonoma County after a seven year hiatus for a night of working man poet’s blues on April 2. Tickets go on sale Feb. 22.

Rumor has it the last time the Okie from Muskogee was in town, he was chugging hard on a bottle of brown liquor and hurled in the wings just before taking the stage. Now that’s Outlaw Country. I’d love to see the rider contract this time.

The Sonoma Valley Film Festival just announced its annual tribute night
will honor Michael Keaton, who rides into town with the new film he
directed — “The Merry Gentlemen.”

Opening night festivities unfurl at the swanky new Jacuzzi Family Vineyards.

The wine-swilling celeb fest runs April 9-13. Check back at www.sonomafilmfest.org for more details.

Scarjo takes on T-Dub: It’s no secret the ladies love Tom Waits. Just in the last couple of years, he’s been covered by Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux and Diana Krall.

When starlet Scarlett Johansson announced her musical debut would be a collection of Waits covers, it was a tad shocking.

It turns out she really did hole up in a Louisiana studio with TV on the Radio producer Dave Sitek and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zimmer. “Anywhere I Lay My Head” (borrowed from “Rain Dogs” lyrics) is due out May 20.

The last time I asked his tight-lipped publicist what the West County growler thinks of the project, she sent me straight to Johansson’s label ATCO.

In other words: “No comment.”
