Weekend buzz: Rocking Needle Park
by Beck

The Live at Juilliard series kicked off last Sunday, but for me the launch party is really this weekend as local indie-rock trio Santiago takes the park stage at dusk.
How many bands have a song about Juilliard Park?
Singer-guitarist Gabe Meline is a musical historian who knows Sonoma County like the back of his hand – or shoulder (dude’s got a tattoo of the signpost for Fourth and A streets on his back. Never been there? Probably because it was ploughed under years ago by Santa Rosa Plaza).
The song “Down at Juilliard Park” is a musical mystery tour of what was once called Needle Park, a 13-acre expanse of green grass, shade trees and the occasional shady drug deal. It was once voted “Best Place to Get Mugged” in the PD.
Along with a little petting down by the bridge and steaming beer breath, the song references “they found all your jewelry at the bottom of the lake” along with neon-lit prostitution at the nearby Astro Motel.
At least I think that’s what I’m hearing in the lyrics. Gabe, is that even close?
Either way, it’s only fitting as the soundtrack for the latest 60-Second Weekend:
Twelve-bar blues bands and Beatles knockoffs (the most popular show ever at Juilliard: The BBC tribute band) usually rule the roost on Sundays at Juilliard Park.
But this weekend is the indie-rock family invasion @ 5 p.m. Sunday. What’s not to love? It’s totally free. Roshambo winery is pouring. BBQ is falling off the bone. And the Astro Motel is next-door.
Also this weekend:
- Former local boy Doyle Bramhall III rolls through The Mystic Sunday night with the reunited Arc Angels.
- The ever popular Kenny Chesney returns to the AT&T Park on Saturday for a beach party with 35,000 of his closest friends.
- The Pidgins promise “to rock your Raccoon socks off” in a free show at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Last Record Store.
Your Daily Dose. Whenever. Whatever. Wherever. Trolling Sonoma County and beyond, John Beck looks for cracks in the pop facade.
