A few weeks ago, I wrote about Sebastopol filmmaker Kristi Moya and her short film “Edible” getting accepted to Cannes Film Festival. I begged her to drop a line while she was in France (and pix of her scarfing since her film is about food as nourishment for the soul). Then I was on vacation last week when she sent it (clever, yes). Although it’s not quite Borat in a …

Anybody going to The Greek this weekend? See
you there. I still remember when Arcade Fire crammed all seven members (and various glockenspiels, gourd grinders and accordions) on stage at the Great American Music Hall in January 2005.
Three things that stuck with me: Regine Chassagne’s wake-the-dead caterwauling. Two members donning motorcycle helmets and beating each other with drumsticks. And a mechanical reindeer draped in white Christmas lights.

It’s been a good run lately for Memphis Charlie. A few weeks ago, he racked up at the annual Blues Music Awards, taking home best song of the year for “Church Is Out,” best traditional blues album for “Delta Hardware,” best album of the year for “Delta Hardware” and best harmonica player of the year.
Last week, he holed up in a Seattle studio with Eddie Vedder and Sean Penn, working …

Persian by way of New
York, Haale likes to say she grew up with
Hendrix in one ear and Hayedeh (the late Iranian singer) in the other.
We are the world, in stereo. Put on your Global Headphones. It
takes a village.
Filtered through her lush East-West vocals, it comes out as “psychedelic
Sufi trance rock.”
Her two latest EPs are “Morning,” which flows mostly in Persian,
riffing off mystics Rumi and Bahar, and the …

This week I’m back in Mississippi visiting relatives. My dad grew up in the Delta, about 30 miles south of Clarksdale in a town called Ruleville. My mom’s side of the family is rooted in Jackson. In the past year, I’ve written a few stories about Santa Rosa real estate developer Charles Evans, KRSH DJ Bill Bowker and blues harp player Charlie Musselwhite all teaming up for various Delta …

Eliot Fintushel – sci-fi novelist, mime, occasional clown, journalist, actor, NEA scout and SRJC
drama teacher – has to be the most talented person I know. Now it turns out he plays the theremin, too. Next Wednesday, he’ll be the
guy beaming up the “Star Trek” theme song at the Santa Rosa Downtown Market
(video to come on Sunday)…but I digress.
In February, Random House released his debut sci-fi novel
“Breakfast with the Ones You …

Tis the season for festivals. Blues, jazz, harmony, more blues, less harmony, until it all gets a little warped. BFD, right?
Yesterday, I chatted up ?uestlove (keeping the beat for The Roots at the Harmony Festival)….
and Robert Cray (think: blues@Sonoma Jazz+)……
and Delfeayo Marsalis (throwing a New Orleans party at the Healdsburg Jazz Festival).
Before the stories run, see if you can guess who said what:
1. “Age and …

Following Danny Glover’s lead, The Coup frontman Boots Riley is also backing out of this Saturday’s UC Berkeley Black Graduation Ceremony as a way of supporting campus custodians and their 18-month
battle for higher wages.
“Many ideas were talked about regarding how to show
solidarity with and not get in the way of this fight,” Riley says.
“Some said
that I should use the opportunity to speak to the audience …

Celebrating the best of both worlds, McNear’s in Petaluma was rocking for Derby Day and Cinco de Mayo. Bartender Kevin Collins mixed up what’s sure to be a classic: The Mint Julep Margarita. Sound nasty? We found just the barfly guinea pig to try it:
But really the Kentucky Derby is all about the hats. Lou Terman explains what it means to be “a hat sculptor”:
