Preaching to the Bridge School Choir

by admin

Update: I never got the photos up yesterday of Tom Waits and the Kronos Quartet at the Bridge School Benefit this weekend. Here they are: So what’s next for the junkyard maestro? Word has it he’s forsaking analog for digital. After recording all over the North Bay – from Prairie Sun in Cotati to In the Pocket in Forestville and Bay View Studios in Richmond, he’s building his own studio somewhere out on Hwy 116 … Read More »

She Got the Jack: AC/DShe Halloween

by admin

Every year, the Mystic Theater throws one of the rowdiest Halloween blowouts in the North Bay. This year was no different. A squirrelly devil in a blue dress won for best costume. Hulk Hogan and his wife took home the couples prize and AC/DShe changed into their royal finest for the second set. If it’s not in the photos, it’s all here (including Gene/Richard Simmons):

A Music Lesson from Tom Waits

by admin

The pick-me-up hit of the fall movie season, “Wristcutters: A Love Story” – starring Tom Waits as spiritual guru – debuts at the West County Film Festival at noon today. Don’t expect the West County singer-songwriter to show up for his usual autograph session and glad-handing ceremony. Waits will be hanging out with Metallica, Jerry Lee Lewis and Neil Young down at The Bridge School Benefit at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain … Read More »

The Colbie Caillat Review

by admin

It must be hard for a MySpace phenom today. Just think about it. One day Colbie Caillat is chilling in her Malibu bedroom, waiting for her toenail polish to dry or maybe listening to Jack Johnson bootlegs, meanwhile strumming her acoustic guitar and dreaming up a batch of somewhat original tunes. It’s a birthright. It turns out Dad produced a few epic Fleetwood Mac albums (round black Frisbees cursed with grooves) … Read More »

Coming to a Mystic Near You: Malibu MySpace Barbie

by admin

22 million clicks later and she’s crowned a MySpace celeb. Rolling Stone anoints her the No. 1 Myspace unsigned act (and then panned her new album for two out of five stars). VH-1 slaps her on the “You Oughta Know” list. Selling out the Fillmore in September, she scores the top download on iTunes and cracks the Top 5 of Billboard’s download chart. And now, surprise, Colbie Callait (rhymes with chalet) has sold out the Mystic Theatre … Read More »

Marie Osmond: So You Think You Can Faint?

by admin

It turns out she’s fine, but last night when Marie Osmond dropped like a sack of Ho Hos while awaiting the judges’ scores on “Dancing With the Stars,” you had to wonder: What’s the difference between swooning and fainting? Can the women of today faint like the cinema dames of the ’40s? And, with Marie taking the cake in her big blue bubble dress… …who else rounds out the Top 5 … Read More »

Day 13: The Hooligan Days Are Over

by admin

There’s always been something sacred about Saturday afternoon in a London pub: Cask ales flowing freely. A steamy Dickensian kitchen churning out bangers and mash, meat pies, fish and chips. And since it’s the weekend, plenty of soccer (aka football), right? Not in downtown London these days. It’s easier to find Kelly Osbourne in “Chicago” than a live Premiere League soccer match. On Saturday, a day when at least a dozen Premiership teams … Read More »

Day 11: Pierre Attacked by Cobra!!!

by admin

We land in Marrakesh late at night (the only airport I’ve been to where they X-ray your carry-on bags again when you get off the plane) and hit the ground running, hopping out of a taxi to drums, swaying naked bulbs and the smoky grills of Djemaa el-Fna. The most sprawling and famous market in Morocco thrives on a state of constant flux as scooters, bikes, cars, horse-drawn carriages spin circles … Read More »

Still Life in Madrid

by admin

In an old-world town of blood-red sangria and death in the afternoon not everyone can blend into dusty plaza bricks and cobblestone alleys passed over by the hordes, a work in progress, our fair lady of mud holding on to a pose, for a million years or more, before someone takes notice un epiphany en disguise, the mute artistic passion of still life from head to toe, the forgotten sculpture of Plaza Mayor until a coin … Read More »

Day 7 and 8: The French Connection

by admin

Quelle Surprise: We ran into Christian Slater in Lyon. Dude’s looking a little hungry these days. From “Broken Arrow” to Arrow, turns out he’s hawking dress shirts in a French parking garage elevator: You gotta love how American celebs push products they would never touch in the States (a Japanese poster of Harrison Ford hugging a giant 6-foot Kirin bottle of beer is one of my all-time faves). Not to worry, Slater just scored voice-over work as … Read More »
