60-Second Weekend: The Art of True Rockage

by admin

When inspired by the Rock Gods of Olympus, if you hold the pose long enough…. photo by Crista Jeremiason You may eventually morph into Our Timeless Hero of True Rockage… Only days before the First Annual Day of True Rockage at the Phoenix Theater, Gio Benedetti (Toast Machine maestro, rock impresario, guitar teacher to the stars of tomorrow and graphic artist) unsheathes the mighty pen to illustrate the eternal battle between diametric forces … Read More »

The Dana Carvey Interview

by admin

“I’m such a dinosaur,” says Dana Carvey. “I’m like Three Dog Night.” He throws out the casual aside while talking about hip young comics who think they’re crossing the line with “blue humor” or potshots at George W. Bush. He’s not too old to “know where the lines are – and they have not been crossed.” What’s the line? “A white guy making fun of race or Islamic fundamentalism.” He has a point. You don’t … Read More »

Weekend Dish: Don’t Fear the Reaper…

by admin

Spanning four decades, Blue Oyster Cult is still rocking hard, dropping in tonight at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma (8 p.m., $30.) Close your eyes, flip the Bic high overhead and sing along: “Don’t fear the reaper….baby take my hand…we’ll be able to fly…baby I’m your man.” It all trips back to the age of the air guitar. Dudes playing for dudes who love to thrash out sick air solos and fat air … Read More »

How much would you pay for an oil stain on pavement?

by admin

How about if it looked like this? A juicy carbon Rorschach you could stare at for hours…. But what if it was photographed by some dude named Tom Waits? The West County singer-songwriter has ponied up his fine art (part of a series he did as guest designer of an issue of Francis Ford Coppola’s Zoetrope mag a few years ago) for an auction at his son’s school – Summerfield Waldorf School. Estimated Value? … Read More »

“The Birds” remake is on (again)….

by admin

The on-again, off-again “The Birds” remake seems to be getting the greenlight, lighting up message boards with chatter. In recent interviews, “King Kong” babe Naomi Watts says she’s agreed to play Tippi Hedren’s role of Melanie Daniels. Filming is scheduled for next year. And “Casino Royale” director Martin Campbell will play Hitchcock. As you might imagine, the old guard isn’t exactly enthused. When the idea of recasting the 1963 classic came up several years ago, Hedren told … Read More »

Soundcheck: Steve Kimock and Friends

by admin

I dropped in on Steve Kimock and Friends at soundcheck before last night’s gig at the Great American Music Hall. A few impressions: Melvin Seals laughing and hamming it up on the keys. Steve’s son John Morgan Kimock kicking it like an old pro behind the drums. His dad joking, “We finally got his ass outta school.” Kimock and Billy Goodman sharing a mike for “Evangeline.” Bonnie Raitt right-hand man, Hutch Hutchinson working out a … Read More »

Video: St. Patty’s Pub Crawl

by admin

Pat Jordan grew a gnarly red beard, Will Rolle showed us the one-finger rule of pouring a perfect pint o’ Guinness and the Nutty Irishman invited us behind the bar to share the secret of spray-on food coloring and the art of mixing green beer. (I should mention that I tried to hook up with Chris Stokeld, once holy proprietor and bar wench at the Old Vic and now purveyor of … Read More »

Firestorm sweeps through Petaluma

by admin

It’s hard to believe Sonoma County never hatched a really nasty, earth-shattering vegan hardcore band. No lard, no eggs, no drugs-.just lightning-quick lactose-intolerant venom. Or better yet: West County freegan hardcore. Blistering face-melters about getting busted dumpster-divingbehind the Whole Foods in Sebastopol or a soundtrack to the Earth First! movement. Never happened. Not to worry, a band from Syracuse made up for our crunchy slacker ways, forming Earth Crisis back in the early ’90s, churning out straight-edge diatribes like … Read More »

Planet Bollywood Comes to Petaluma

by admin

Typically, if you’re jonesing to get your masala on, looking for a quick injection of Indian culture, you have to hop in the car and head at least an hour south. The Naz 8 movie theater shows nothing but Bollywood cinema, but it’s in Fremont. Some of the best sari shopping is in Berkeley’s Little India. Indian temples abound in the South Bay, but there’s nothing like it here in Sonoma County. “My dream is that in five years, … Read More »

Soundcheck: Sol Flamenco

by admin

In this beautiful mashed-up age we live in, an era when Sonoma Jazz + stages Kool and the Gang and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival starts pickin’ and grinnin’ with Elvis Costello, what’s so wrong with flamenco at a bluegrass fest? Like it or not, it’s coming at you this weekend when Sol Flamenco – the super athletic and rhythmic trio of Joelle Goncalves, Sara Zanolini and Liz Bortolotto – invades … Read More »
