Halloween in August

by admin

A huge KISS fan in the fifth grade, I can remember racing home and trying to slap on the Gene Simmons Demon face paint just before dark on Halloween night. When it all ran together, I became a zombie or Alice Cooper or some twisted John Wayne Gacy painting. I even remember taking another stab at it a few years later, but even with the runny fake blood I never really … Read More »

Outside Lands: Day 3

by admin

VIP seating cost $250 a day, but here’s a glimpse of the best seating on the premises: This mole couldn’t decide between Widespread Panic and Grace Potter so he dug out a little sanctuary right in between. Best tattoo of the fest: Best moustache of the fest: Best use of ingenuity: The dudes working behind the CrowdFire tent made lawn darts out of tent stakes: Best shot of Vienna Tang: Best quote: Jeff Tweedy talking about … Read More »

Outside Lands: Day 2

by admin

We hired a new freelance photographer to make the rounds this weekend. Bad Santa was gonzo for the Primus reunion. Turns out Les Claypool wasn’t kidding about the outerspace theme in pre-fest interviews. Flanked by two giant astronauts, Primus tore up the Twin Peaks stage (the one with the best free seats up on the hillside), diving into a 10-hour extended run through “My Name is Mud.” Alright maybe it was … Read More »

Outside Lands: Day 1

by admin

I would love to have heard the exchanges last night between the sound engineers and Another Planet Promoters after the sound cut out not once but twice during the Radiohead set. On the jumbotron you could still see Thom Yorke singing away, drummer Phil Selway was keeping the beat – in mute agony. If you missed it, here’s the story I filed for the paper last night. At first, Yorke had a sense of humor: “Who stepped on … Read More »

Listen up: GZA

by admin

If you missed my GZA story, check it out here. We talked for about an hour. The dude was hilarious, especially when he started comparing his creative process to the invention of corn flakes: He loves talking about his buddy Curtis, his latest foil 50-Cent. I told him I’d read the lyrics but I hadn’t actually heard the first song leaked off of “Pro Tools” – a lil’ anti-Fiddy diddy called “Paper … Read More »

Dear James Hetfield….

by admin

Metallica singer-guitarist James Hetfield is stirring up trouble in Marin County. He just built a massive 300-foot fence (complete with barbed wire!) blocking hikers, bikers and horseback riders access to a popular Terra Linda trail. Some might say: “It’s his land, he can do whatever he wants.” Others might yell: “We have the right!” Either way, I’ve got an idea for protesters: Metallica has a new song they’ve been roadtesting for awhile, demos have been leaked and it … Read More »

Send in the Clones

by admin

If you’ve flipped on the TV at all this week, you’ve probably seen trailers for “The Clone Wars.” If not, you should know that the latest “Star Wars” installment, opening in theaters nationwide today, has finally realized George Lucas’ wildest dream: No actors. A dizzying animated spectacle, it’s entirely digital. No flesh or blood or Hayden Christensen. Mean and green, Yoda’s back in a big way (wasn’t he always animated?). So is Jabba the Hutt, whose son, aka … Read More »

Jazz and Blues for Music in the Schools

by admin

Standing backstage at the Petaluma Wine Jazz and Blues Festival, Petaluma High music director Cliff Eveland described a familiar scenario in the age of state budget cuts: “There have been a couple of years when all of a sudden my budget just disappeared,” he said. So what happens to the music program? “You can’t get your instruments repaired. You can’t buy new music. You can’t travel to festivals or competitions.” As he’s explaining the … Read More »

Bigger, Badder Petaluma Wine Jazz and Blues Festivus

by admin

I’m standing backstage with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy frontman Scott Morris doing a big fat double take. The death-defying swing revival band just finished ripping through Go Daddy-O takes of Cab Calloway’s “Hey Now, Hey Now” and “Tarzan of Harlem” during soundcheck at the Napa Valley Opera House ” so I know it’s him. But the usually swank and dapper dude may as well be naked: No fedora to cover his chrome dome. No … Read More »

Video: Scootering with Lyle Lovett

by admin

If you missed the review of Lyle Lovett’s massive show at the Wells Fargo Center Wednesday night, here it is. But really it was all about the day after: Scootering around Santa Rosa with the sly-grinnning Texas crooner – in his large “Texas” helmet. In a phone interview a few weeks before, we’d rambled off on the subject of YouTube and “making of” docs. I mentioned we shoot a lot of video for the web and he … Read More »
