If you missed the best of NYE wrap I barfed out a few weeks ago, here goes.
Otherwise, you know my pick for best hole-in-the-wall party has to be the open-mic burlesque at The Black Cat.
How does that even work?
(mas Chelada!)
Maybe it’s an open mic and then a burlesque show?
We’ll soon see. Tonight the mission is simple: Myself and roustabout sidekick Cali Knight (who once chugged a Chelada and raw egg …

When I wrote today’s throwaway column in the paper, I was just
making the point that Christmas is over; it’s time to move on. You’d better cash in
those gift cards before the companies go out of business and here are a few shows worth checking out this weekend.
Pretty rote stuff, right?
Well, not to some peeps.
My long lost uncle Leon Beck (no relation) called in to
inform me that Christmas has only just …

You’re probably glogging, egg-nogging and bird-dogging your way through the holidays. But it’s never too early to start planning how you’re gonna get out of the
house this weekend. Until Obama invokes college football playoffs, there’s no
bowl game worth watching until Jan. 8.
And while you might consider this the
lamest entertainment weekend of the year – think again: That arrives in
mid-February.
Here’s a quick hop through the genres:

Elvis may have left the building, but that doesn’t mean you
can’t cuddle up for a holiday duet with the King.
Here’s your challenge: Martina McBride’s got nothing on you.
To prove it, you’re gonna sing her part of “Blue Christmas” on the new “Elvis
Presley: Christmas Duets” album.
All you gotta do it go to the Sony BMG website and click on “Record
with Elvis.”
Make sure to scan the lyrics: “You’ll be doin’
alright, with your …

The stuff of legend, for years people have joked about Van
Halen’s backstage ultimatum – a rider contract that, along with “herring in sour cream” and a tube of KY Jelly, required
a bag of M&M’s with all the brown ones carefully weeded out.
The Smoking Gun, easily the best aggregate of ridiculous rider
contracts in the world, made it a 10-year mission to track down the 1982 53-page Van Halen World Tour rider.
Just …

As Christmas looms and the economy teeters on the edge of
chaos and the lexicon takes on new gems like “econolypse,” musicians are once
again rallying around the cause.
It’s in the lifeblood of any troubadour worth their salt.
They play at your wedding, they march at your wake and they stage benefits when
times are tough.
This weekend, three holiday concerts give back to the
community and that’s where you ” the culture vulture …

Just to hear David Sedaris sing “Away in a Manger” is worth a listen to NPR’s original broadcast of “Santaland Diaries” at least once every holiday season.
He describes it as summoning Billie Holiday.
But it sounds more like repressing a burp in the back of your throat, perhaps a stray tadpole, while trying to belt out a chestnut.
When it first aired in 1992, Sedaris came out of nowhere. We’d never heard …
