Part 3: Musician behind street music petition gets fined

by admin

You had to know it was coming. Up until this point, Aaron Milligan-Green – the street musician activist who has collected 1,500 signatures in a petition to overturn a Santa Rosa noise ordinance banning street music – had only been warned. On Saturday afternoon, two bicycle cops ordered him to stop playing drums and leave Depot Park in Railroad Square, threatening to confiscate his instruments and arrest him. He was eventually … Read More »

The Demise of Seven Ultralounge

by admin

Remember when Seven launched to massive fanfare, touting hot DJs, San Francisco ambience and $230 VIP tables? Then came the fights, unruly bouncers, shootings, frequent cop calls and strict city of Santa Rosa supervision. Now, three years later, the Seventh Street ultralounge is changing ownership and will eventually re-open as a new nightclub. Gianni Messmer said he and fellow Seven owners Nabi Baitsaeed and Brad Yust have been bought out by building owner Gerry Buhrz. Escrow closes in … Read More »

Audio: Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Pirates of Sound

by admin

I don’t really care if you spend your life illegally downloading music. Go ahead and torrent your days away, bit by bit. Fine by me. But when Will Oldham, aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy, aka the latest Audio Paranoid Skitz, ruins advance copies of his new album – just for the sake of circumventing all you pirates out there – I’m a bitter man. Imagine pushing play on the first song (”Beware Your Only Friend”) and … Read More »

“Motherland” takes home SXSW award

by admin

A few weeks ago, I interviewed San Francisco filmmaker Jennifer Steinman and wrote about her new film “Motherland,” the powerful documentary that got a sneak peek on opening night of the Sebastopol Documentary Festival. If you missed it, here’s the story. The film chronicles a group of grieving moms – two of them from Sonoma County – who travel halfway across the world to find themselves again. I had a hunch it would do well on the … Read More »

Part 2: Petition to save street music in Santa Rosa

by admin

Just to catch you up to date: Last week I blogged about street musician, Aaron Milligan-Green, who’s sick of being harassed by police for playing live music in downtown Santa Rosa. Taking the power to the people, he’s gathering signatures for a petition to overturn the noise ordinance restricting his art form. So far, he has around 1,500 signatures. He’s shooting for 5,000 before he submits it to the City of Santa Rosa. The … Read More »

Sheryl Crow coming to Santa Rosa?

by admin

It hasn’t been announced yet, but it looks like Sheryl Crow will play the Wells Fargo Center in September. Sounds like Levi Leipheimer’s wife, Odessa Gunn, had something to do with luring her to Wine Country(they’re still buds from Crow’s old Lance Armstrong days). Tickets should go on sale in April or May. Check back here for more info. Also, Huey Lewis has been booked to play WFC for the first … Read More »

Audio: New Mastersounds @ Hopmonk

by admin

The blokes from Leeds, one of the most unlikely funk scenes outside of Newfoundland, started out at the Boom-Boom Room on their first America tour four years ago. Now they’ve finally graduated to the house across the street: The Fillmore, headlining under the purple chandeliers this Friday night. But, don’t bother gassing up the car. Just sit tight here in lovely SoCo as they migrate northward to blow out Hopmonk on Sunday. I talked to New Mastersounds frontman Eddie … Read More »

Butchering the Swiss rebel yell

by admin

Legend has it Swiss cowherders came up with the yodel eons ago as a way of communicating across alpine meadows, both proving their virility to the Swiss misses and losing their voices in a half hour or less. Early settlers smuggled it to Appalachia and eventually it wound up on a Jewel album. Saturday night, Dan Hicks played Simon Cowell at KRSH’s Twangfest yodeling competition at the Mystic Theatre. Behold the video:

The petition to save street music in Santa Rosa

by admin

The other night, while watching the Rhythmtown-Jive band blow horns, bang drums and parade through Railroad Square for Mardi Gras, I spotted a guy who joined the parade late, chiming in with a lonely cowbell. Once we got over the “Dude, more cowbell!” moment, which took a few minutes, he explained why he was also carrying a clipboard with him. Meet Aaron Milligan-Green. He’s 21 and goes to SRJC. And he’s sick … Read More »
