Calling all Deadheads

by admin

As the Dead make their way across the country, dropping in on Obama at the Oval Office (where they spotted a vase of scarlet begonias), jamming with Branford Marsalis and taking over Madison Square Garden, the reviews have been nothing but love poems. Well, except for Hartford. It sounds like they were a little off that night. Even the fans are under the microscope. Here’s the way a Slate reviewer sized up the adoring audience: “After … Read More »

Recession buster: Open bar from 9 to 10 p.m. Friday at The Vine (RIP Seven)

by admin

And that’s just opening night. The next day is Derby Day at The Vine, the new downtown Santa Rosa nightclub replacing Seven Ultralounge. Look for a big fat hat party, bourbon tastings and mint juleps galore. When new manager Aaron Buhrz finally gets to the part about the country band, I realize he’s not kidding. “I think on Memorial Day we’re gonna have a ‘kick off the summer party’ with a country band and good barbecue.” A twang … Read More »

Audio: Bassnectar breaks it down beat for beat

by admin

Before Bassnectar, aka Lorin Ashton, unloads his Wobbly Factory sound system and homegrown brand of “omnitempo maximalism” Monday night at Hopmonk Tavern, I asked the Berkeley DJ if he would shed some light on his creative process. First listen to a preview clip of his new single “Art of Revolution”: Then listen to what was on his mind as he put it all together…. Before the story comes out Friday, here’s a little … Read More »

Goodbye Seven Ultralounge, Hello The Vine

by admin

That’s the name of the new nightclub taking over the former Seven space on Seventh Street in downtown Santa Rosa. Aaron Buhrz, who runs The Beauty Bar in San Francisco and is the son of building owner Gerry Burhz, will manage The Vine, launching an opening party Friday night. He also says they’re gearing up for Wednesday Market nights. The building is undergoing renovations – inside and outside. Other than that, I don’t know a lot … Read More »

Petaluma actor lands coveted role in Daniel Johnston biopic

by admin

More than a few actors and directors have made the pilgrimage to Texas to woo the Johnston family and score the movie rights to the life story of Daniel Johnston – the bipolar outsider artist and musician championed by everyone from Kurt Cobain to Tom Waits and the subject of the riveting 2006 documentary “The Devil and Daniel Johnston.” Until now, they’ve all failed. So what was so different about Petaluma High grad Gabe Sunday? “I did my … Read More »

Farm-raised music – not just for chickens

by admin

It’s the kind of thing that comes to you while holding a flapping chicken with both hands and watching the Green String Farm Band make music in a chicken coop: What came first, the band or the farm? Actually, it started with a schoolhouse. Fifth-generation Petaluma farmer-singer-songwriter Arann Harris was invited out to an 1860 schoolhouse among the goats and chickens and baby bok choy on the eastern outskirts of Petaluma. It seemed like a fitting place … Read More »

Where will you be at 4:20 today?

by admin

Everyone’s all fired up about today being April 20th – the day the stars align to celebrate that pesky little weed known as cannabis. Odd as it may seem, The Huffington Post and The New York Times of all websites take a pretty dedicated stab at demystifying the roots of 420 – the toker’s siren call the world over. Trivia: You may remember the 2003 marijuana bill voters approved was named … Read More »

Review: The hip-hop symphony of Adam Theis

by admin

When I ran into keyboardist Matt Berkeley a half-hour before the gig, he just smiled and shook his head: “This is a once in a lifetime event. I’ve been trying to tell all my friends what a big deal this is.” No kidding. A 50-piece orchestra. Cinematic jazz arrangements. Bursting horns – so furious, the players can’t help but shoot out of their seats for solos that clock faster than a lit … Read More »

Weekend bits, nubbins and video ephemera

by admin

You can always hit the local brew and chew and drink up Jake Mackey blues at Russian River on Saturday. Or wander down to the Last Record Store for the vinyl-palooza Record Store Day on Saturday. Volker Strifler Band and Bob Livingston go on at 1 p.m. Or watch as Austin singer-songwriter Bob Livingston never bothers to plug in Saturday night at one of the most intimate venues around – Studio E in Sebastopol. Or, if … Read More »

Video preview: Devendra Banhart @ The Mystic

by admin

Chatty and trippy as usual, Devendra Banhart busted out new material off his upcoming “extremely painful to mix” album Tuesday night in a sold-out show at the Independent in San Francisco. Taking a page from “Death in Venice,” “Chin Chin, Monk Monk” starts off with: “When I was a young boy, I had a lot of young boys. Now that I’m an old hag…” before diving into a sea of weird … Read More »
